The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property is the federal government’s central point of contact for patents, trade marks, geographical indications of source, design protection and copyright. It is financially independent and is a legal entity in its own right.

We put our expertise in technology, science and intellectual property at the disposal of a diverse client base consisting of patent attorneys, international industrial companies, start-ups as well as educational and research institutes.

To strengthen our Chemistry Patent Experts Team, we are seeking to recruit immediately or by agreement a:

Patent Information Specialist (m/f)

Examples of domains of expertise are: chemical process engineering, polymers or organic chemistry.


Your main tasks

Applying your expertise in the fields of patent information and chemistry to provide services to our customers at home and abroad. This includes, in particular:

  • Independently carrying out patent and technology searches, mostly freedom to operate searches and validity searches
  • Preparing patent analyses
  • Providing information on intellectual property

Your profile

  • A degree in natural sciences, preferably in chemistry, macromolecular chemistry or chemical engineer/process engineering
  • Many years of experience in the field of patent searches, in particular in the field of searching for chemical structures or polymers
  • Ideally experience with at least one of the following databases or search systems: STN, Chemical Abstracts, CAS Registry, Marpat, Reaxys, MMS, Derwent World Patents Index, PatBase, Orbit.com, Thomson Innovation, TotalPatent
  • Broad knowledge of international patent law
  • Excellent knowledge of English as well as a very good knowledge of German or French (with a good knowledge of the other language); other languages an advantage
  • An independent, reliable, precise and pragmatic method of working
  • Accustomed to successfully prioritising many tasks and working on them in parallel


You will have the chance to perfect your skills in the field of patent searches, broaden your specialist knowledge with regard to professional search engines and databases and – after having completed the necessary training – actively participate in examining national patent applications. In addition, we will provide you with a customised training programme in a stimulating environment, attractive employment conditions as well as flexible working hours.
