What is GM Platform Services

You will be part of GM Platform Services, a remote-friendly department of 8 engineers located in three countries (France, Serbia, Switzerland).

The Platform Services group has two main responsibilities:

1. Providing the infrastructure to run Ricardo and tutti.ch,
2. Create the internal tooling used by software developers to evolve our products.

As a Site Reliability Engineer you’ll develop the tools that are needed by the software engineering teams and you’re working together with them to ensure that our online marketplaces are running reliably.

How do we work

We are a team distributed over multiple locations. Therefore, our default work mode is asynchronous. We write a lot and try to communicate as concisely as possible. We limit our ”Work in Progress” so that you can focus on the task at hand.

Usually, work is assigned to two people so that you always have a sparring partner. This gives you the flexibility to plan the work as you see fit and to pair when needed. It is also a great way to share the knowledge in the team.

We regularly have short (15-30 min) internal lightning talks, where we show each other what we worked on and we've learned.

Because the activities on tutti.ch and Ricardo never stop, we have to keep the lights-on 24/7. For that we have a mature on-call organization. Joining the on-call rotation is voluntary but as an SRE, you should be willing to join the rotation when needed.

What we are looking for

Besides the usual tools for infrastructure management we have a few internal tools, written in Go. We are looking for someone with experience in Go, because you will be developing these tools. Additionally, you should have experience with distributed systems running on Kubernetes on GCP or AWS.

You strive to reduce toil and you don't have to be told what to do. When you notice a problem, you don't look the other way; you either fix it or come up with a plan. You are curious and want to understand how things work. You are not afraid to ask for help and you are willing to help other engineers.

SRE is a complex role and there are many different areas of expertise. Nobody can know everything but you should be familiar with some of the following tools and technologies:

• Go development experience
• Kubernetes
• Istio
• Prometheus (Mimir/Cortex)
• Terraform
• Helm
• CI/CD (CircleCI/Github Actions)
• Centralized tracing and logging (e.g. Tempo & Loki)
• Cloudflare
• GCP/AWS (or any other Cloud provider)

3. Interview Day
   1. Coding Interview (60min)
   2. Architecture & Design (60min)
   3. Meet the team (25min)
   4. Meet the Director (25min)
4. Decision within 48 hrs after interview day

Your first year at Platform Services

The first three months

For the first three months you will get an buddy who will guide you through the on-boarding and is available to you for any question you might have.

You will get to know our architecture, our rituals, and our tools.

During your on-boarding you will be using the same tools that our developers use. If you encounter any issues with them, you are expected to improve these tools.

You will deploy your first changes and you will join our on-duty rotation during business hours.

Month three to six

By now you should be familiar with our ways of working and you will get the first projects assigned to lead.

You are able to contribute code to our tools, and you can assist developers when they have questions regarding the infrastructure.

We will set your post-probation period goals and figure out in which area you want to become an expert.

Six months+

After six months your on-boarding should be completed and you’ll be able to take over the lead for projects. You’ll be working with other teams, participate in the technical leadership calls, and help us towards ours goals as the Platform services group.
